In our example it is “D21”, so it is has a Heavy Duty 4-Speed Manual Transmission.
Next is the actually the VIN number.
The first 4 digits are together.
The first digit is a letter and stands for the car line. Example: J = Dodge Challenger
The second digit is also a letter that stands for the price class. Example: S = Special
The third and fourth digits are numbers, which stand for the body style. Example: 23 = 2 Door Hardtop.
In our example it is “JS23”. That decodes to:
J = Dodge Challenger
S = Special (R/T)
23 = 2 Door Hardtop
Then the next 3 digits are grouped together.
The first digit is a letter and stands for the engine. Example: N = 383 1-4BBL 8 CYL.
The second digit is a number that stands for the car year. Example: 0 = 1970.
The third digit is a letter and tells you where the car was built. Example : B = Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, USA.
In our example it is “N0B”. That decodes to:
N = 383 330HP OR 335HP 1-4BBL 8 CYL ( Same as above engine code).
0 = 1970 – Remember that this is the number zero.
B = Built at Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, USA
Next, there are 6 digits grouped together. This is the production sequence number of car that rolled off the assembly plant.*
In our example the Sequence Number is '100001'.
* Note: This number doesn't mean that your car was the n'th, lets say Barracuda, built. It is for all of the cars built on that assembly line.
